Frame

Q: What is conservation picture framing?

A: The key is to create an environment for a piece of art to ensure it is protected and will last. Different techniques are used for securing works of art on paper, canvas and three-dimensional objects to guarantee the longest life span possible and inherent value. Acidity from wood and paper products, excessive changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to ultraviolet light will damage any artwork. To limit the decay and destruction, only plant-based materials such as cotton board and wheat, or rice-based adhesives, and plastics such as Mylar and framing grade acrylic should come into contact with a piece of art. The interior of the framing must be constructed to allow expansion and contraction with environmental changes while providing protection. If applicable, any glazing should be treated with ultraviolet filtering to prevent fading. With these elements in place and proper care, your artwork may be enjoyed for generations.
